We have done this lyric analysis because it will give us a better idea of how to come up with a narrative for the song. This will ensure that our music video is relevant to the song. In order to have a full understanding of the song we must first understand the lyrics.

Blame - lip sync practice

Here is a video we have created to help us practice our lip syncing skills before we film our actual music video. This has helped us learn what the problems are and how to over come them. It has also shown us how long it takes to sync up a small amount of a song.

Here is the original music video:

Why are we practising lip syncing?

The reason we have made this video is to help us with our own music video. From this task we have learnt how to successfully lip sync and make it look like the artist in the video is actually singing therefore making the music video look more professional. We have also learnt how to edit videos and still consider important aspects such as lip syncing.

From this task we now know the importance of lip syncing and how it makes music videos look more professional and of a better quality. We can incorporate these skills when we begin to film and edit our own music video.

Inspirations from Film and other Music Videos

One film we will take inspiration from is Inception. This is because it is about a similar topic of sleep.

We have not taken direct inspiration from the movie but we feel due to the multiple storylines within Inception it has some relevance to our own music video. We have also found that we have taken slight inspiration from the film with the idea that things are not as they seem.

The style of this film would also fit in very well with our music video.

We also took inspiration from the dark night as we liked the cold over all look and style of the film. The colour grade of the film helped us to create the look we were going for.

Target Audience Questionnaire

This is questionnaire we made aimed at our target audience. We intended to ask around 10 people who are members of our target audience. The results of this questionnaire will help us determine how our music video will look and help us understand what our target audience wants when they see a music video.

Here are the results to the questionnaire. We asked 6 members of our target audience the questions. The findings are on the blog post titles "target audience questionnaire analysis."

Music Video Mood Board

Here is a mood board to help us with the type of style we want to capture in our music video. All of the pictures above demonstrate either the framing, lighting or location we want to recreate throughout our music video.

Genre Research - Electronica

Electronica is an umbrella term that encompasses all kinds of electronic instrument-based music. The reason the artist has not chosen a single subdivision, such as House, Industrial Dance, Ambient, etc., is that the song draws genre characteristics from most, if not, all of the genres within.

Electronica music video styles vary greatly, depending on the specific genre. Therefore we have lots to chose from, with regards to genre characteristics and conventions.

Popular Electronica Artists:
Avicii

Deadmou5e

Calvin Harris

Plot and Narrative Work

Here are our initial ideas for the narrative of the video. None of these are final.

Insomnia Music Video Ideas

First shot - car or lorry driving past on road

Second shot - lying in bed, see car’s headlights in room, crane down. Music starts after a few seconds of this shot

Tap dripping in time with music (Time remapping) (ECU)

Lift shot (shown in Lift Door VFX Test blog post)

As lyrics come in, cut to Ben in bed again, then REALLY quickly cut between loads of things that are keeping him awake – tap dripping, insect flying around the room, blinds blowing in the breeze, etc.

Sees *crime at “won’t you help me find my rest - aid my sleep at my behest. Insomnia has put me to the test.” – section

In the video, he’s lying in bed trying to sleep, intercut with him singing the song in a small, fairly dark, claustrophobic (he feels trapped) room, intercut with a narrative of him seeing something that troubles him *(witnessing a murder of some sort, seeing a mugging, etc.) – why he can’t sleep

Possibly at end of video subtly show that he is dreaming – he finally fell asleep
The small room where Ben sings – very dark blue

Possibilities
It seems that he stopped the mugging, murder, etc. at the start but later on it’s revealed that he’s lying to himself to try to eliminate the guilt so he can sleep

Song Possibilities/Chosen Song and Artist

Within our chosen genre, Electronica, we have narrowed our choices down to three possibilities:
  1. Insomnia - Ben Hesketh
  2. Beautiful Now - True Colours
  3. I Love It - Iconapop
We have chosen these songs because we feel that they would be easy to come up with a narrative for.

We have decided to use Insomnia by Ben Hesketh for our music video. This is because we can have direct information about the song from the artist himself. The lyrics can also be represented as literal or non-literal which gives us a range of narratives to use.

Genre Mind Map - Electronica

Here is the mind map we have made for our chosen genre, Electronica. This will be useful when making our music video as we will need to know the generic conventions of the genre. When making our music video we will be able to look back at this mind-map which will allow us to get a greater feel in the video.

Lift Door VFX Test

Here is a concept test for a VFX shot we plan to use in our music video to introduce the song title. In the actual music video, if we use this shot, we will use a different kind of lift - one that uses two doors - one on each side - and we will track the first half of the word to the left door and the second half to the right.

The test involved tracking the text to the lift door, duplicating the original footage and creating a mask to make the text appear to move into the wall with the door.
